Canada was the first of the three co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup to be eliminated following the 3-0 loss to Morocco. Alphonso Davies played a limited role in his home World Cup owing to fitness issues; the 25-year-old had a hamstring issue before the match and was effectively ruled out to preserve his health (and probably the Canadian Soccer Association’s rep with Bayern Munich). Fans took to Davies’ social media to voice their displeasure at the left-back for *checks notes not being able to play because
he was injured:

This is honestly, to put it lightly, a bit of an overreaction. There was no way Jesse Marsch was going to risk Davies in a do-or-die knockout match when the player isn’t at 100%, he knows better than that. Davies also isn’t reckless like Samuel Umtiti, who risked his health to win the World Cup with France but never recovered fully from his injury at club level.
Canada can and will qualify for another World Cup and you best believe Davies will be back fully fit. It is a shame not being able to play as much as he would’ve hoped to at a home World Cup, deep down, he wanted to play as much as he could but it’s out of his hands, but Davies and Marsch know that the left-back still has plenty of playing years to go. Don’t forget, Davies is arguably Canada’s best player so don’t knock him down when he’s already down.
