Monte Coleman was an 11-round draft pick who went on to play 16 seasons in the NFL, and win 3 Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins. The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff announced that Coleman has passed away at the age of 68. No cause of death was provided. Coleman was a staple of the Redskins defense for over a decade and a half, and was he was inducted into the Redskins Ring of Fame in 2015. He was a key part of the Redskins championship era, and he will be missed by family, friends, teammates,
fans, and the NFL world.
Coleman finished his career with 999 tackles, second only to Darrell Green in team history. He had 17 interceptions, good for 19th in franchise history. His three defensive touchdowns tie him for second all-time. He’s tied for sixth place in fumble recoveries with 14. And his 43.5 sacks is good for #4 on the Redskins’ list, and is behind only Ryan Kerrigan among linebackers (and, really, a 3-4 OLB is more like a defensive end).
