FC Twente’s technical director Erik ten Hag has offered Barcelona hope of landing young defender Ruud Nijstad in the future.
The Dutch club have already acknowledged interest from Barca, while Nijstad has admitted he’d love to play alongside Pau Cubarsi.
The defender signed a contract extension last summer, but Ten Hag admits his club will have to make big sales.
“Every club in the Netherlands has to sell every year. You are the Eredivisie,” he told Goedemorgen Eredivisie.
“If you want to remain competitive
in Europe, you need a certain budget. But to maintain that budget, you simply have to sell. That applies to FC Twente, but also to Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord.”
Ten Hag also made it clear that Barcelona aren’t the only club keen on Nijstad and that there has been plenty of interest in the defender.
“He is a very great talent, who came into the team last season. He is still very young, but he does so in a very self-assured way. It is a pleasure to work with that boy, Quite a few clubs from the top of Europe have come forward. I think that is only a good thing,” he added.
“Several clubs from the top eight in Europe have made concrete offers. But he simply made a very conscious choice to play for FC Twente this season. It is also particularly nice that he very consciously chose to stay with Twente for at least another year. Maybe even longer, but in any case, this season.”
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has admitted he’s keen to sign another defender, although it remains to be seen if the club will move in January or wait until the summer.
