Hermann Gerland was probably Bayern Munich’s top youth academy coach for two decades, guiding the Bavarians’ academy with his wise eye and steady hand. But in 2021, he left with then-Bayern coach Hansi Flick to join Germany. The Bavarians then went through a number of head coaches, from Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel before finally finding a long term solution in the current man in the hot seat, Vincent Kompany.
Despite not working at Bayern anymore, Gerland has met Kompany and came away deeply
impressed by the Belgian’s character.
“He’s a top-class professional,” Gerland summarized succintly (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I was at the stadium recently watching the second team. All of a sudden, Vincent was sitting behind me watching the game. He had just returned from Korea with the team on the same day. Every now and then, I have shirts signed for charity, and he told me: ‘You can come to any training session, and I’ll always be happy to sign them.'”
How good it feels to have such people at Bayern.
