Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarterfinal clash with Real Madrid was a glorious battle that ultimately ended in the Bavarians edging past their Spanish rivals 6-4 on aggregate and 4-3 on the night. The victory was not without controversy, though, as Real’s Eduardo Camavinga was given a second yellow card for delaying the re-start after a foul by picking up the ball, a decision that has left the 15-time UCL winners furious with the referee.
Asked about the fury of Los Blancos at the refereeing
decision after the match, Harry Kane had no sympathy whatsoever for the vanquished opposition: “I’m sure they are, but they have had many things go their way over the years. So…yeah, sloppy yellow card for [Camavinga],” Kane stated, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “It was very similar to how I got a yellow card last year [in a 3-0 win against FSV Mainz 05]. I missed a game against [Rasenballsport] Leipzig towards the end of the season. As a player, you cannot pick the ball up and run away with it when you are on a yellow card. It is a big risk. Obviously, the ref made a decision and,” he started to smile, “It was nice to get [a decision] in our favor.”
Real Madrid certainly have developed a reputation for benefitting from refereeing decisions in the Champions League in the past and there were a few key moments, such as a phantom foul being awarded ahead of Arda Güler’s stunning free kick goal and Antonio Rüdiger’s senseless barge into Josip Stanišić not being called a foul ahead of Kylian Mbappe’s goal, that went against Bayern in the same match.
Kane makes a good point that picking the ball up to prevent a quick re-start is a big risk. It leaves the referee with a decision to make. Whether one believes Camavinga’s delay of the re-start was enough to warrant being given a second yellow card or not, why chance getting a yellow card at all? For a few extra seconds of delay? It was poor risk assessment from Camavinga.
