The time right after the NFL draft can seem chaotic, either reports about undrafted free agent signings coming from multiple sources, some more reliable than others. A lot of players have deals in place before the draft ends, and others are only given an invite to a rookie mini-camp to try to grab a spot on the roster.
Washington had 8 UDFA signings initially reported, and then a few rookie mini-camp invites were added. One of those was for Iowa kicker Drew Stevens. This was a big deal for a franchise
that is on its 8th kicker since the new regime took over. There was a conflicting report from another source that said he was actually signed to a contract, making him the 9th reported UDFA the Commanders added to their 6-man draft class.
From the Hawkeye of the Storm reported the signing, and gave further details on the conflicting reports. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz initially reported the mini-camp invite, and that was accurate according to FHS’s Cory Brada. He adds that the Raiders were also interested in Steven’s on Sunday night when Washington invited the Iowa place kicker to rookie mini-camp. Brada goes on to say that by Monday, the Commanders, Raiders, and Bills were all offering Stevens an UDFA contract due to the increased interest. Brada also said Stevens canp feels Washington offeres the best opportunity to earn the starting job.
The Commanders re-signed kicker Jake Moody after the season, and he’s currently the only one on the roster. He was signed from the Bears practice squad after last season’s bug veteran signing, Matt Gay, was released in mid-November. Moody was signed for a minimum contract and should have competition in camp this offseason. He was 10 for 11 on both field goals and extra points in six games for the Commanders.
Drew Stevens was Iowa’s kicker for the ladt four seasons. He made 76 of 95 field goals(80%), and made 124 of 126 extra points attempts(98.4%). If the reported signings is accurate, Stevens’ camp was right to identify Washington as a top team to compete for a starting job.
