Prior to the current homestand, Mariners GM Justin Hollander provided some updates on players dealing with injuries across the system.
OF Dominic Canzone is “feeling better” after being hit in the wrist/hand area by a pitch in Monday’s loss against Philadelphia, but remains out of the lineup tonight. X-rays taken after the injury were negative, and his scans have come back clean, but he’s still dealing with some soreness. Per Hollander, he would be available to pinch hit tonight if necessary, and should
return to the lineup this series, maybe even as soon as tomorrow. Luke Raley will start tonight in right field in Canzone’s place.
RHP Logan Evans had a cortisone shot to address inflammation in his right elbow shortly after being placed on the IL last week and should be able to return to his throwing program within the next few days. His injury was not related to the collision at home plate; he felt a twinge in the elbow while throwing a changeup earlier in the outing.
INF Ryan Bliss is moving through his rehab from a torn bicep well ahead of schedule. He’s at T-Mobile Park working out with the coaches in the field, and is planning to report to Tacoma for a rehab assignment sometime next week.
RHP Gregory Santos is throwing at the complex in Peoria and should also begin a rehab assignment with Tacoma soon, tracking towards a mid-September return, although Hollander cautioned that date is “written in pencil” because there are “a lot of error bars there.”
On the minor-league side, INF Brock Rodden unfortunately broke his hamate bone and is done for the season. Also, the team continues to monitor OF Jonny Farmelo as he works through expected soreness in coming back from an ACL tear followed by a stress fracture in his ribs, which is the reason you’ll see him not playing every game. Also, for those of you hoping to see top pitching prospects Ryan Sloan or Christian Little up in Everett, the team has managed their innings carefully to the point where both should be able to finish out the season with the AquaSox without needing to be shut down, so no need to rush up to see either one immediately on this homestand. (Same is true for Jurrangelo Cijntje, if we have any Ozarks/South Central-based readers.)
