Wow, the needle on confidence meter measuring this fan base is going to break with all the drastic changes week to week.
Two weeks ago, 38% of Broncos Country had confidence in the direction of the team, then a big win pushed the needle to 88%.
And then a loss to the Niners, slammed that number right back into the 30s. Or perhaps the move to have Sean Payton as the primary play caller now is behind the shift?
Either way, fans are not too high on this team right now.
But deciding the problem is a little
harder. Most fans pin the blame on the offense, but not exactly on play calling.
The bigger complaint is the run game followed by the performance of Bo Nix.
Payton addressed questions about Nix by pointing out QB play is a lot easier when all the little things are done right.
And the Broncos have not been good at the little things.
“Yes, are there certain throws that from a timing standpoint [Nix] wants back? Yes. But I think collectively when you’re playing well on offense, you’re doing a lot of little things well, and then that job for him becomes somewhat easier,” Payton pointed out. “So that’s really the focus this week is the little things, detailing the little things and we’ll see that in the end product.”
Offensive coordinator Davis Webb, who will not be calling the plays this week, still believes in the offense and their scheme.
“Extremely, extremely close,” he said of the offense figuring things out. “I think there are a few things in the pass game that were close last week, a few things in the run game that were close last week. You can see the second halves of the Jaguars game, the Rams game. I mean, I just mentioned three good teams right there. Kansas City was tough on everybody… So I think getting off to this start, being at 2-2 is not what we wanted, but it’s where we’re at. I think that a lot of teams in the NFL will be OK with that.”
Broncos Country may not be. But a win in LA, and a bump to 3-2 can make everything better.
