TCU men’s basketball begins its season tonight with a home opener against Lindenwood. The Horned Frogs are getting a head-start on next year, with news dropping Sunday evening that four-star center Nick Welch Jr. has committed to TCU. The 6-foot-9, 220-pounder from San Pedro, California chose the Horned Frogs over Cal, Virginia Tech, Stanford and more. Welch Jr. is the first recruit of the 2027 class for coach Jamie Dixon.
247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein describes Welch Jr. as “a strong, physical, and fundamentally sound big man with some developing inside-out skills. He loves to turn and face in the mid-post, can put the ball on the floor a bit, has good footwork, and utilizes multiple pivots and step-throughs. While he can sometimes be reliant on bigger or longer defenders biting on those fakes, he is capable of finishing with both hands around the basket and is athletic enough to finish hard above the rim if he can load up with a step or two.”
TCU offered Welch Jr. on Sept. 17 and he committed to the Horned Frogs less than two months later. His father, Nick Welch Sr., was the Co-Mountain West. Conference Player of the Year in 2003-04 at Air Force.
