During a new interview with Justin Barrasso, Bryan Danielson was asked about his colleague, former roommate, and almost-brother-in-law, John Cena.
The two crossed paths in in the ring plenty — Daniel Bryan
beat Cena for his first WWE title* — but they weren’t famous rivals or anything. Still, considering how much of their lives they shared while working together prior to Danielson joining AEW in 2021, I would have thought he’d have checked in on Cena’s retirement run. If only to compare it to his own, or knowing how much Bryan loves pro wrestling in general, to see Cena’s match with AJ Styles in Australia a couple months back.
But Danielson is an interesting cat. He’s a deep thinker… who also finds d*ck jokes to be the funniest thing in the world. That may or not be useful for you as you parse this quote, but it’s what I thought of when I read his answer to Barrasso’s question about Cena:
“I honestly haven’t watched. I’m entering this experimental phase of my life where I’m experiencing less input from media. When I went to visit my mother recently, I made a 13-hour drive. I didn’t listen to any music, I didn’t listen to any podcasts. There was nothing but silence. The only times there wasn’t silence was when my wife called, I got on an AEW call, or when I called mom.
“As I experiment with less input, that also means less wrestling input. So I haven’t seen any of John Cena’s final run. I’m not watching, but I hope it goes really well for John. That guy deserves the last year of his career to be awesome.”
A lot of us are trying for less screen time, B. But 13 silent hours?
Anyway… that’s the very Bryan Danielson reason Bryan Danielson hasn’t seen any of John Cena’s final year in WWE.
*Randy Orton cashed in seconds later to take the belt from him, but he had it briefly at SummerSlam 2013.
