Arizona women’s track and field will be sending a large contingent to NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. next month.
On the final day of NCAA West Regionals, seven Wildcats women athletes qualified for championships, including the 4x100m relay team and three high jumpers.
Arizona set a school record in the 4x100m relay Saturday, running a time of 43.28 to finish third. The team consists of Brooke Lyons, McKenna Watson, Taylen Wise and Hollan Powers. The group shaved nearly a half second off their previous
best time of 43.77.
Wise also advanced to nationals in the 100m hurdles, running a time of 12.95 to finish seventh. The senior will be making her first appearance at NCAA Championships.
Powers, like Wise, will be competing in two events in Eugene, as she previously qualified for nationals in the heptathlon.
Arizona’s high jump trio of Paris Mikinski, Kya Crook and Emma Gates all qualified for nationals. Mikinski tied for first place Saturday with a personal-best jump of 1.87m. Crook and Gates finished in 5th and 11th, respectively, as both reached the 1.87m mark on multiple attempts.
Arizona has long been known for its women’s high jump program. Former Olympian Brigetta Barrett still holds the collegiate record with a mark of 1.99m.
The Arizona women who qualified on Saturday for nationals are joined by Erin Tack (javelin) and Sydnie Vanek (long jump), both of whom advanced on Thursday.
In total, the UA will be sending nine women and seven men to Eugene, giving the track and field program its largest presence at nationals in several years.
