Roster moves
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.
- Recalled from Triple-A Reno: LHP Brandyn Garcia
- Recalled from Reno: INF Jordan Lawlar
- Optioned to Reno following yesterday’s game: RHP Taylor Rashi
- Placed on the 10-day injured list: INF Pavin Smith (strained left quad; retro to 8/28)
Fare the well, Taylor – we hardly knew ye. The move is what I expected for Bryce Jarvis after his marathon 88-pitch outfit in the opener against Milwaukee. But he survived, and should probably be available again later in tis series. It will be Garcia’s second stint with the D-backs in August, after coming over in the Josh Naylor trade. The first one lasted two outings, one of which went well, while the other…
did not. We’ll see how it goes.
The same is likely true for the other, bigger news, which see Jordan Lawlar called up, a couple of days before rosters expand on Monday. I guess it was necessary due to the (re)injury to Smith, though of course, Lawlar won’t be playing any first base. That will now be Tyler Locklear’s again – I can hear the fanbase frothing as I type. Lawlar goes right into the starting line-up, and we hope it goes better than his previous trips to the majors. He is just 4-for-50 with no extra-base hits and 20 strikeouts. Some of that was back in 2023 as a raw 21-year-old, but he was 0-for-19 with 9 K’s earlier this year. He has had a .966 OPS in Reno, but as we all know: that’s in Reno.
If it feels like a while since we were in Dodger Stadium, that’s because it is. The balanced schedule means only two trips a year there now, and the last was over three months ago, from May 19-21. We took the opener, tied the second game in the ninth and scored two in the top of the tenth, only for Shelby Miller to melt down, allowing three in the bottom half. We then dropped the rubber game 3-1. Quite a lot of water under the bridge for both teams since. Of the thirteen players the D-backs used in the series finale, barely half (seven) are on the current 26-man roster. Three have been traded away, two are on the IL, and one is in the minor leagues.
