Things are going pretty well for Kara Lawson lately. Last spring, her Duke team pushed South Carolina to the brink in the Elite Eight. Recently, she was named the head coach of the U.S. Women’s Olympic Basketball team. And she’s been on a recruiting tear too.
In May, Lawson got commitments from 6-4 Taylor Sofilkanich and 6-1 Sanai Green, both considered 4-star talents.
Less than a week ago, 5-star forward Bella Flemings chose Duke. And on Saturday, another 5-star guard, Autumn Fleary, committed to
Lawson’s Duke program.
At 5-7, Fleary is the 12th-rated player in the class. She’ll likely be given the ball on Day One, a la Bobby Hurley, and be asked to run her team.
No matter how you cut it, Lawson is out of what you might analogize to the start-up stage. With players like Jadyn Donovan, Ashlon Jackson, Delaney Thomas, Taina Mair, Arianna Robinson and Toby Fournier, her program has a really impressive foundation.
With the new class she’s gathered, Lawson’s moving out of the start-up stage and now shooting for a much bigger market share, to continue the analogy.
And with NC State and UNC also both pretty good, women’s basketball in the Triangle could be heading for a Golden Age.
