The Miami Dolphins are who we thought they were. And, by that, I unfortunately mean they are a team struggling to grow as a unit, play together on the field, and get results that are better than an average margin of defeat of 18 points. Miami is 0-2 on the season, and there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed.
But, that was the
expectations for this season. Not to revel in the misery of a team struggling in just about every aspect of the game – including holding on to the ball when trying to punt – but this is a team that perfectly fits former Dolphins’ head coach Cam Cameron’s “fail forward fast” mentality. Miami is going to make mistakes. They are going to have problems in communication, execution, and understanding of the game, especially with rookies starting or being major rotational pieces all over the roster. They have to take their lumps, learn from them quickly, and improve their execution the next time they are on the field.
The Las Vegas Raiders beat the Dolphins in Week 1, then the San Francisco 49ers dropped Miami in their Week 2 game. The good news is, the team comes home to Miami for the first time this year for their Week 3 game. The bad news is, they are hosting the Kansas City Chiefs, who look set to make a charge to, and through, the AFC playoffs this year.
The Dolphins are who we thought they were. They probably will be all season. But, this year is more about laying the foundation for the future than it is about the play on the field each Sunday.
