Ahead of their penultimate game of the regular season, the Mets have called up right-handed relief pitcher Dylan Ross, who would be making his major league debut if he were to get into a game, and designated
fellow right-handed reliever Kevin Herget for assignment to make room for him on the active and 40-man rosters. The Mets have also placed Brett Baty on the injured list with a right oblique strain, an injury that almost certainly ends his 2025 season, and called up utility player Jared Young to take his place on the roster.
Ross made one appearance in the Mets’ minor league system in 2024, having been drafted by the Mets in the 13th round in 2022 before missing the 2023 season entirely because of Tommy John surgery. This year, however, Ross climbed the ranks of organization, starting in High-A Brooklyn before earning promotions to Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse during the season. In total, he’s thrown 54.0 innings with a 2.17 ERA, 80 strikeouts, and 33 walks. His best work came in Syracuse, where he had a 1.97 ERA in 32.0 innings, albeit with his highest walk rate at any of the three levels.
Herget pitched capably for the Mets in various major league stints this year, finishing the regular season with a 2.77 ERA and a 3.37 FIP in 13.0 innings of work.
Baty’s injury is a big blow to the Mets should their season extend beyond Sunday, as Mark Vientos has more or less become unplayable as a defender at third base. But Ronny Mauricio, a solid defender at the position, has barely played over the past several weeks as the Mets have kept him on the active roster while very rarely giving him playing time.
Young has gotten 46 major league plate appearances this year and been so-so at the plate in that time, hitting just .190/.239/.500 with four home runs and a 100 wRC+.
