Sky Germany journalist Kerry Hau jumped into the dynamics of the transfer from Bayern Munich to PSV Eindhoven for Paul Wanner. Hau’s commentary shed some light as to why it was not working out between Wanner and Bayern Munich.
BFW has broken it down into excerpts. Below is Part 3.
The attention — and money — showered on Paul Wanner seemed to create a hostile environment around him on the Bayern Munich campus. After a potential move to Wolfsburg was blocked internally, the youngster was under enhanced
scrutiny.
Jealousy on campus
Salihamidzic and his squad planner Marco Neppe weren’t the only ones who managed to prevent the Wolfsburg deal with financial arguments. The duo Salihamidzic and Neppe saw Wanner as a future starter and predicted a breakthrough similar to Jamal Musiala’s .
The fact that Wanner soon received a permanent place in Nagelsmann’s squad and signed a contract that was extremely lucrative for a youth player caused problems. From then on, not only was the hype surrounding the youngster gigantic, but so was the envy. Especially at the Campus, FCB’s youth academy.
Other youth players, as well as their parents and advisors, paid particular attention to Wanner’s performances. They were sometimes even the topic of conversation in the stands at UEFA Youth League, Junior Bundesliga, or Bavarian Regional League matches. Remarks like “What Wanner does, my son can do twice as well” were among the more polite sort. Not every 16-year-old can easily take that kind of thing. High public expectations also contributed to Wanner’s failure to consistently deliver. And so, after the departure of the Salihamidzic-Neppe duo, the impression arose, even within the management, that Wanner was overrated and overpaid.
Ina nutshell, Wanner’s meteoric rise seems to have been mismanaged by the club, Wanner’s representatives, and the player himself. Yes, it was a matter of too much, too soon…and also not enough when it mattered most.
Bayern Munich is sputtering toward the finish line of this transfer window, but at least games are starting…right?
