The Jacksonville Jaguars had every opportunity to extend their winning streak to four games, but a familiar divisional rival had other ideas. Houston Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn drilled a 49-yard field goal as time expired to seal a dramatic 34-31 victory at Wembley Stadium, leaving Jacksonville to reflect on a game in which costly mistakes and defensive lapses proved decisive.
Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdown passes, Travis Hunter delivered a historic performance on both sides of the ball,
and Cam Little connected from 60 yards to force a tie late in the fourth quarter. Yet none of it was enough to overcome a Texans offense that consistently found answers when it needed them most.
Here are three reasons why the Jaguars came up short in London.
Run defense runs out of steam
Jacksonville’s defensive front had established itself as a major strength during the opening weeks of the season, but Houston exposed its vulnerability at a critical point in Sunday’s contest. The Texans entered the fourth quarter with a 31-21 advantage after Jawhar Jordan broke through for a 25-yard touchdown run with just 50 seconds remaining in the third period.
The play was particularly damaging because Jacksonville had just allowed the Texans to convert a third down without having to make a conventional defensive stop. Cornerback Jarrian Jones was flagged for pass interference on third-and-four, giving Houston a fresh set of downs and moving the ball into scoring territory. Jordan made the Jaguars pay immediately, finding a crease in the defense and racing into the end zone to restore a 10-point lead.
Woody Marks also helped Houston establish a more balanced offensive attack, while quarterback C.J. Stroud ensured the Jaguars couldn’t simply focus on stopping the run. The combination kept Jacksonville guessing and made it increasingly difficult to get off the field on third down.
The Jaguars deserve credit for battling back into the contest, but the defensive front needed to make a stand when Houston had the opportunity to take control. Instead, Jordan’s touchdown left Jacksonville facing another uphill climb, and it took a remarkable fourth-quarter effort just to get back on level terms.
For a defense that had helped propel the Jaguars into the AFC South lead, this was a disappointing time to lose its grip on the line of scrimmage – particularly against an offense that had, until this point, failed to move the ball effectively all year.
Penalties and explosive plays the difference
Jacksonville’s defensive problems extended beyond the running game. Stroud completed 24 of 34 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns, repeatedly punishing the Jaguars whenever their coverage broke down or the defense handed Houston an extra opportunity.
Jaylin Noel was a particularly troublesome matchup. The Texans wide receiver finished with a career-high 107 receiving yards and a touchdown, including a crucial 50-yard reception with 48 seconds remaining in the first half. That completion immediately put Houston in scoring position, and Stroud found tight end Foster Moreau for a one-yard touchdown with just eight seconds left before halftime.
The damage was significant. Jacksonville had taken a 14-10 lead when Lawrence connected with running back Bhayshul Tuten for a two-yard touchdown, but the defense surrendered the advantage before the break. Rather than heading into halftime in front, the Jaguars went into the locker room trailing 17-14.
The problems continued after halftime. A too-many-men-on-the-field penalty on a Houston punt extended a Texans possession, and Noel subsequently caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 24-14. Later, Jones’ pass interference penalty helped set up Jordan’s touchdown run.
Those errors turned manageable situations into scoring opportunities. The Jaguars weren’t simply beaten by spectacular individual plays; they repeatedly gave Houston additional chances to move the chains and capitalize.
There was a late redemption moment when Hunter intercepted Stroud in the end zone, but even that outstanding play couldn’t erase the earlier damage. Jacksonville had forced Houston into enough difficult situations to compete, yet its inability to close out drives ultimately proved decisive.
Too many points left on the field
Lawrence’s four touchdown passes make it difficult to argue that Jacksonville’s offense was the primary reason for the defeat. The quarterback threw for 306 yards, connected with Tuten twice, found rookie tight end Nate Boerkircher for his first NFL touchdown, and later linked up with Hunter to keep the Jaguars in contention.
However, an early sequence demonstrated how quickly a promising possession could unravel.
Jacksonville appeared to have taken control of a drive when Tuten found the end zone on a rushing attempt, only for a holding penalty on tight end Brenton Strange to wipe out the score. The Jaguars were left to start again, and Lawrence subsequently threw an end-zone interception to Houston cornerback Kamari Lassiter.
Instead of putting points on the board, Jacksonville came away empty-handed. The penalty and turnover were particularly frustrating because the offense had already done the difficult work of moving into scoring territory.
The Jaguars eventually found their rhythm, and Lawrence’s four touchdown passes kept them within striking distance throughout the afternoon. But in a game decided by three points, throwing away a scoring opportunity carries enormous consequences. A touchdown on that early drive would have changed the complexion of the contest and potentially altered the way Houston approached the remainder of the first half.
Jacksonville’s offense did enough to give the team a chance to win, but it couldn’t afford to squander opportunities against a divisional opponent capable of matching its scoring output.
The final blow
The Jaguars’ comeback deserved admiration. Hunter’s fourth-quarter touchdown brought Jacksonville within three points, and his subsequent interception gave the offense another chance to rescue the game. Little then delivered a spectacular 60-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining to tie the score at 31-31.
Yet Houston still had time to respond. And respond they did.
For Jacksonville, the defeat was a reminder that a strong offensive performance cannot always compensate for defensive breakdowns and self-inflicted mistakes. The Jaguars had the talent and resilience to fight back, but they couldn’t make the decisive stop when it mattered most. Sunday’s defeat was almost the polar opposite of the first London leg, where a stuttering offense was bailed out by special teams in a game the Jags should have lost. This week, their luck ran out.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and left Jacksonville at 4-2 heading into its bye week. The Jaguars remain firmly in the AFC South picture, but their performance at Wembley provided a clear list of issues to address before their next game.
