Villarreal manager Marcelino García Toral has given his take on the controversial decision to take a Spanish league game to the United States, saying if the match against FC Barcelona must be played in Miami,
his team will travel and compete without hesitation.
The Villarreal vs. Barcelona game is controversial because moving any La Liga match outside of Spain breaks the traditional home-and-away format and disadvantages local fans. The long trip adds logistical challenges and potential fatigue for the teams, raising questions about sporting fairness. Critics also see it as prioritizing revenue and international exposure over the integrity of the competition.
Speaking in Valencia after participating in the seventh session of the Valencian Football Federation coaches’ course, Marcelino emphasized that the club views the game as a unique experience.
“If they tell us we have to play there, we will play there. It is a new experience against a great team, a great match. Whether it is here or elsewhere, we hope to win,” Marcelino said.
The potential Miami fixture has been approved by FIFA, giving Villarreal a rare opportunity to showcase Spanish top-flight football on an international stage. Marcelino spoke with measured optimism towards the plan.
Supporters of the Miami move argue it’s a chance to grow La Liga’s global presence and attract new fans in the United States. Playing internationally also offers players a unique experience and showcases Spanish football on a larger stage.
When asked whether playing away from their home stadium, La Cerámica, would affect their approach, Marcelino acknowledged it is too early to know. “Football is the same everywhere, with more heat, less heat, more cold, less cold, depending on the time of year. It will be a longer trip than usual, but we adapt to what the competition demands,” he added.
Regardless of the arguments for and against the move, it seems Villarreal’s manager is ready to take on the challenge.
