Yesterday saw Spain advance 2-1 over Belgium, with the Spanish joining France as the first two teams to reach the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup. It was Mikel Merino with another clutch late goal for Spain, scoring in the 88th minute after Merino scored a 91st-minute winner over Portugal in the last game. With Merino coming off the bench in both games, I joked to a friend that he may never start a match again.
Today we have the last two quarterfinals. One of the four teams that plays today will
be in the World Cup final – but only one of them. The opening match features Norway against England in Miami. Erling Haaland and Norway have been one of the more surprising teams to reach this stage of the competition, completing an upset win over Brazil to arrive here. Haaland himself will certainly be familiar with the English squad from his many years at Man City.
The late game is Argentina and Switzerland in Kansas City. Perhaps a bummer for Messi that he doesn’t get to play in Miami again this time, but he and Argentina certainly enjoyed their 3-0 win over Algeria in Kansas City to begin their World Cup campaign. Argentina has had to battle through its last two games, edging Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time, and needing a shocking late comeback from 0-2 down for a late 3-2 win over Egypt. Can they continue these theatrics, or will they be worn down from these heavyweight clashes, giving Switzerland a path to victory? We’ll find out tonight.
So, what will the games have in store for us today? Stick around, drop your comments, and have a great time.
