The possible domino effect of Mattia Perin potentially leaving Juventus doesn’t look like it will arrive in January.
That is mainly because Juve have no intention of parting ways with the man who wears the No. 1 jersey.
According to Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto on Tuesday night, Juventus have informed Genoa that they have rejected what appears to be the final bid to bring the 33-year-old goalkeeper back to his boyhood club. On top of that, it is in large part because Juve don’t intend to let
Perin move clubs during the winter window, which would have started a total domino effect as the Bianconeri look for a new backup goalkeeper behind Michele Di Gregorio both domestically and abroad. But, with Juve informing Genoa that they don’t intend to part ways with Perin, it is now the latter that is expected to go elsewhere in Serie A and around Europe to try and find an upgrade in goal in place of former Bianconeri prospect Nicola Leali.
It has been previously reported by Nicolo Schira that Perin had agreed to personal terms with Genoa on a three-year deal that would have seen him return to the Luigi Ferraris on a permanent basis. The negotiations between the two clubs was always expected to be the much more difficult hurdle to clear — and it has played out exactly as many thought it would.
As you can imagine, Genoa are not exactly happy with Juventus considering the fact they had honed in on Perin — who made his debut with the club at the tender age of 17 back in 2011 — as their top target to sign as their new goalkeeper in January. We don’t really know in terms of the reporting out there just what Genoa’s bid actually was, but considering there’s definitely some pushback from one side of the potential Perin deal that they think there was an adequate bid submitted but ultimately rejected.
And thus causing Genoa to suddenly have to pivot to a different goalkeeper rather than somebody who they wanted to bring back to a club he’s already played for once — including a season-long loan spell while technically being under contract with Juventus during the second half of the 2019-20 season and the entire 2020-21 campaign — since first signing in Turin back in the summer of 2018.
It’s one less thing for Juventus to potentially worry about during the winter window. And when you consider that Perin is looked at as one of the true dressing room leaders on this roster, keeping him is going to be an important aspect of Luciano Spalletti continuing to get things turned around come the new year.
