Rutgers football has added another opponent to its future out-of-conference schedule, according to fbschedules.com, who first broke the news that was later confirmed by outlets such as NJ.com. The Scarlet Knights will take on the Zips on September 13, 2031, adding to a 2031 schedule that already had a confirmed matchup for Rutgers, Temple.
Rutgers and Akron have squared off twice before, with the Knights winning both games. They are also slated to take on the Zips in the 2027 season.
The Knights have
made a habit of scheduling MAC opponents for their non-conference schedule. In 2025, Rutgers played both Ohio and Miami (Ohio). In 2026, they are slated to play against UMass before they are slated to play against Kent State and Akron twice, and Central Michigan once in the following years. Rutgers currently holds a record of 16-5-1 against teams currently in the MAC, including UMass, which was not in the MAC when Rutgers played them previously.
