Arizona men’s track and field’s contingent of competitors at NCAA West Regionals put together an impressive first day in Fayetteville, Ark.
Five Arizona athletes advanced to the next round of NCAA regionals, and shot putter Tyler Michelini punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships next month.
Michelini finished fourth in the shot put first round with a top throw of 19.48m. The top 12 finishers advanced to NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., which run June 10-14.
Arizona showed off its speed on the track, with five runners and hurdlers qualifying for Friday’s quarterfinals. The top 12 from each quarterfinal will advance to NCAA Championships.
Mason Lawyer, the Big 12 champion in the 100m and 200m dashes, advanced in both events. Lawyer finished sixth in the 100m dash with a time of 10.12 and 12th in the 200m dash, running a 20.68.
James Onanubosi also advanced in the 200m, placing 18th with a time of 20.80.
Lawi Ngetich advanced in the 1500m with a time of 3:40.70, good enough for 15th place.
In the 110m hurdles, both John Paredes and Parker Duskin advanced. Paredes took 10th on Wednesday with a time of 13.52, while Duskin placed 15th with a time of 13.63.
The quarterfinals of the men’s 4x100m will also take place Friday. Arizona will be represented by Onanubosi, Paredes, Duskin and Lawyer.
The women’s competition get underway Thursday, with 11 Wildcats in action.
