Malachi Moreno is a Kentucky kid through and through. Some players dream of playing in Lexington, but the kids who grew up just have a different sense of what Kentucky basketball means to the entire state and BBN.
Moreno also grew up a Cats fan, so he seemingly has a vast knowledge of the greatest tradition in college basketball. He put that knowledge on display as he listed his all-time Kentucky starting 5, plus a 6th man.
Point guard was none other than John Wall. Wall is a UK icon, especially for
kids Moreno’s age, despite spending just one season in Lexington. The two-guard belongs to Malik Monk. It doesn’t get much better than a guy who can drop 30 (or 47) on any given night. While I’m not sure he’d have been my choice, Monk’s microwave scoring ability would have paired well with Wall.
At the three spot, Moreno went with Jack “Goose” Givens. While he is the current radio announcer for the Cats, Givens probably isn’t well known around current recruits and players that didn’t grow up bleeding blue. Goose is an all-timer for sure.
Moreno picked Anthony Davis for the power forward position. It’s hard to argue this one. One of the all-time Kentucky greats and a National Champion. DeMarcus Cousins took the center spot. Again, for a guy who probably grew up watching Wall and Cousins, it makes sense, as they really put Lexington back on the map.
Finally, the sixth man was Reed Sheppard. A Kentucky legacy and one-year wonder, I have to assume there was some recency (and friendly) bias with this choice, but Sheppard was a fun player while at Kentucky, and his dad is a legend.
