Deadline Day is turning out to be a much quieter affair than I expected, mostly because I think all the bats—t crazy stuff happened yesterday and now we’re just getting the confirmations. Like this one — Tottenham’s official socials have now confirmed the loan of Pape Matar Sarr to Juventus.
Sarr’s loan is for the whole season and also includes a purchase option
of €28m (£24m). This is the part of the story where I talk about how funny it is that Juventus continues to be broke-bois and can only afford loans with options that they may or may not actually pick up. It’s for this reason that I’m not sure we won’t see Pape back at Tottenham next summer, but I can say with pretty safe confidence that it’s likely no matter what happens that he is not long for Tottenham Hotspur. If Juventus don’t end up buying him he’ll be offloaded somewhere else either on loan or permanently next summer.
It’s sad, because Pape is one of the sweetest, nerdiest guys on the squad, and I’ve always liked him. But Roberto De Zerbi has other plans, and those plans don’t include Pape. It’s a bummer, but that’s football.
