Bayern Munich went too Norway hoping to have an easy evening against Viking FK in the Champions League. The actual match was far from it, and the Norwegian side was able to knot the game 3-3 in the 90 minute.
Bayern was down a man from the 74th minute, though, after Frenchman Michael Olise received a second yellow card after throwing the ball at Viking skipper Zlatko Tripić right after being carded for a tactical foul seconds earlier. Olise was thus sent off, receiving the first red card of his career.
After the game, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany discussed the red card received by his star player, downplaying the severity of the situation, but said Olise regretted his actions (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “He knows he made a mistake. You can see that he’s sorry about what happened and that he regrets letting the team down. That’s absolutely fine — these things happen. Today wasn’t a final or a semi final, but these are the kinds of moments that can have a decisive impact on a season.”
The Belgian also highlighted the psychological battle Olise lost.
“I told him that the opponent outsmarted him,” Kompany concluded. “When you’re much better than your opponent, sometimes you just need to play your game and focus on being the better team rather than getting involved in unnecessary situations. We can’t change that now. Hopefully we can look back on this as a moment when we learned a lesson.”
Bayern will now have to do without its superstar in next week’s Champions League match against Arsenal FC.
