Tom Bischof’s start to life at Bayern has been difficult. Not through any deficits in his performances, but because minutes in his favored position in midfield are hard to come by. Still, he has now started
two games in a row for the Bundesliga champions, doing so at the unfamiliar left back position. German news site Tz captured the situation:
Is FC Bayern unbeatable this season? In their home game against Leverkusen, the German record champions were already leading 3-0 after the first 45 minutes. And that was despite coach Vincent Kompany making sweeping substitutions and leaving several stars like Harry Kane on the bench. One player who impressed was new signing Tom Bischof. He was deployed in the unfamiliar role of left-back.
The midfielder, who joined from Hoffenheim for the new season, is versatile. He already started at left-back in the back four in the 3-0 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Now Kompany has placed him in that position again, and Bischof knew exactly what to do.Bischof has started three of the last five Bundesliga matches. He is increasingly finding his place in Munich’s star-studded squad and holding his own in the competition for starting positions. He is still waiting for his first
Champions League start, having recently played 21 minutes against Club Brugge. Bayern fans, however, are by no means writing off the young talent as a bad signing, but are looking forward to everything they can expect from him, including his potential as a left-back.
Bischof was knows for being versatile at his previous club TSG Hoffenheim, filling in at attacking midfield or on the wing. So one supposes playing in defense should not be that alien for him, either. Put him in attack, midfield or defense and he will apparently still perform. Perhaps one day Bischof and Manuel Neuer will switch positions, just so that they can both check off the one position they have not played yet. It doesn’t that seem that ludicrous to suggest, anyhow.
