Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is currently jailed in Mexico after he was deported from the United States following over a month-long stay in detention after he was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in early July.
His arrest came just days after Chavez battled Jake Paul to a decision in a boxing match held in Anaheim, Calif. The Department of Homeland Security announced that Chavez had been detained with plans to deport him to Mexico, where there was an active arrest warrant for
alleged involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives.
Chavez ultimately spent 46 days in detention before he was deported to Mexico and immediately jailed there on the pending charges. The Mexican National Detention Registry showed Chavez was taken into custody on Monday after being transferred from a border checkpoint.
He’s currently being held in a jail in Sonora, Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed Chavez’s arrest during a morning meeting with the press, where she stated that the boxer “was deported” and “there was an arrest warrant in Mexico from the Attorney General’s Office.”
Chavez was initially arrested amid allegations that he had links to the violent Sinaloa drug cartel, with an arrest warrant issued for him in Mexico back in 2023. The investigation took four years, but ultimately, Chavez was charged, and U.S. officials eventually arrested him before deporting him back to Mexico.
The son of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, the 39-year-old fighter is a former middleweight champion who faced notable opponents such as Canelo Alvarez, Sergio Martinez, and Daniel Jacobs during his career. More recently, Chavez started participating in fights against notable names from MMA, including his loss to Anderson Silva and a decision win over UFC veteran Uriah Hall.
In the fight against Paul back in June, Chavez lost an uninspired decision, which dropped his record to 3-3 in his past six appearances. Now, Chavez is facing a legal battle in his native Mexico after he was detained and deported from the U.S.
