Bayern Munich executive for sport Max Eberl had some positive news with regard to Serge Gnabry’s extension. The winger who is in his final year of the contact with Bayern has impressed with his performances this season. The Bayern brass are exploring his renewal and Eberl’s comments following the 3-1 victory over Sporting CP point to a potential pay cut.
A solid bounce back
In the final months of his contract, Gnabry cuts a completely different figure compared to him in June. Considered a someone who has been punching
way below his weight, the 30 year-old has not justified his €18m wage bill. However, this season Gnabry has been a different beast. Thrown into a mix of number 10 or wide winger roles, Serge has put out strong performances. With 11 goal contributions so far and playing like he was made for the CAM role, Gnabry has earned himself an extension.
Talks are positive
Exec for sport, Max Eberl was happy to update (via @iMiaSanMia) that a renewal is in the works. “We’re talking to each other. We’re in good and open talks,” said Eberl. “We’re trying to find a way – on the one hand not to exceed our budget, on the other hand to make an offer that the player can live with, I’m talking in general not just about Serge. That’s our task. Hopefully we’ll find a way,” added Eberl hinting that a pay cut is likely.
Extend Gnabry or sign a true Left winger?

Musiala’s injury and Gnabry’s form this season surely makes a case for a contract renewal. However, once the Moose is back , the situation would be very different. Musiala would be the preferred CAM, which would push Gnabs out wide. The right wing is currently occupied by one of the best right wingers Michael Olise and one of the best youngsters in Lennart Karl. Luis Diaz has proven to be a mainstay on the left and a second spot behind him and Musiala would be available for Gnabry.
With that in mind, perhaps it should be strongly considered whether Bayern should go for an out and out left winger over the 30 year-old Gnabry. The demand of pace and physicality at the 10 role is lesser than the demand for the same on the wings. Although Gnabry is doing decently on the left wing, it would be wise to transition Gnabs out of the wing and preserve his CAM playing abilities. Therefore, Gnabry’s potential extension is better viewed as a backup to Musiala with an eye out for a winger to back Diaz up.
Let us know your thoughts on this situation and where you view Gnabry in Bayern’s squad once Musiala returns.
