This was the first left turn of the night, but Matt Stafford isn’t getting younger, and the Rams will need a quarterback after the veteran signal caller does retire. Apparently they hope that can be Ty Simpson.
Here’s everything you need to know.

What the Rams are getting:
Simpson is a top-two quarterback in this draft class and some would even go as far as to say he’s the more pro-ready passer than Fernando Mendoza. That comes down to his repeatable mechanics that leave very little
variance from play-to-play. Simpson is a high-floor, low-ceiling player who will be a fine starting quarterback at his best and a steady backup at his worst. He makes just enough plays off-platform and has good enough wheels to work for first downs when protection falls apart. He’s not likely to start as a rookie and will need the right coaching staff to bring him along after just one season as a starter in college.
Strengths
- Mechanically sound from top to bottom, especially footwork when navigating the pocket
- Possesses enough movement skills to evade pressure and create enough outside the pocket
- Does not overthink the layup throws
- Generally safe and secure with the football, preferring to play as a game manager than gamebreaker
Weaknesses
- Only one season as a starter in college
- Can become antsy in the pocket when pass rush gets after him early
