While the results have mostly been there for Liverpool this season, at least up until a stumbling eight day stretch that saw the Reds lose three on the trot heading into the October international break,
the consensus is that this is a group that hasn’t yet clicked into high gear.
Everyone watching has their theory as to what the issue is, but the reality is Liverpool have looked short of their best in almost every phase and across every positional group. Put simply, nobody has looked as good as last season, including Argentine star midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.
A pair of goals for Argentina in their second friendly of the break, though, could turn out to be just what Mac Allister needs to get a little confidence back and perhaps return to the kind of form he regularly displayed last season. At the very least that’s what he’s hoping for.
“I like scoring goals, but I aways try to do my best for the team,” Mac Allister said. “Scoring goals helps, it can give you confidence—especially at a time when, personally, the season maybe hasn’t started in the best way. So this helps with continuing to build that confidence.”
It’s worth noting, perhaps, that Argentina’s match against Puerto Rico ended as something of a 6-0 laugher, though with the first and third goals to his name it’s also worth noting perhaps that Mac Allister’s goals came while proceedings were still theoretically in doubt.
The game was moved to Miami from Chicago at the last minute due to political turmoil in the United States and with growing concerns the nation is now a dangerous destination for tourists and fans ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Mac Allister has now safely returned to Liverpool.
