What is the story about?

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition. . .such as it is (or was). . .is apparently over.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Vikings have made their decision, and that Kyler Murray will be their starter at quarterback going into Week 1 of the 2026 regular season.

Neither Murray nor J.J. McCarthy have gotten glowing reviews coming out of training camp for the most part so far, with both quarterbacks

having flashes against Brian Flores’ defense but also having their share of struggles as well. In the end, however, it appears that Kevin O’Connell has decided to go with the veteran in Murray.

Murray signed a one-year deal with the Vikings for a little over $1 million this offseason after playing his first seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He’s receiving well over $30 million from the Cardinals this season as part of an extension he signed before the 2022 season, which is part of why his salary with the Vikings is as minimal as it is.

McCarthy now, presumably, will serve as the backup to Murray, with Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer rounding out the depth chart at quarterback for the Vikings.
