According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany presented a request to the club to acquire RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons.
Despite having the support of board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund, supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß nixed the idea:
Before the Bundesliga opener against RB Leipzig, Coach Vincent Kompany personally went to Uli Hoeneß’ home at Tegernsee
to talk to him about the thin squad. Kompany advocated for Xavi Simons and tried to convince Hoeneß of making a move. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund had already prepared the transfer in the background. The coach’s argument was that a player like Simons would fit in perfectly in Bayern’s squad plans. The problem, however, is that Hoeneß and the supervisory board are sticking to their loan only policy – and RB Leipzig would not let Xavi leave on loan. The Dutchman is a priority target for Eberl. Kompany also explained to Hoeneß his ideas and how he’s planning with Simons.
Asked by @SPORTBILD, Uli Hoeneß did not want to comment on Vincent Kompany’s visit. Sport Bild also asked Xavi Simons about a potential agreement with Bayern, he didn’t want to comment either.
So far, Kompany was reserved when it comes to making demands, both publicly and internally. But now the coach is not afraid to voice his opinion. Several players also share the same opinion regarding the squad.
For Kompany, this is his second failed sales pitch of the summer (we all remember the Florian Wirtz story). This time, however, it appears that Kompany is a victim of circumstance rather than not having a convincing story or request.
Right now, Bayern Munich is planning for a massive(and busy) summer of 2026 and is aiming to be smart with its money for this season.
Bayern Munich got off to a red-hot start this season and we are thrilled with the early returns. With the end of the transfer window coming up, there is still much to discuss, so let’s not waste any more time. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Flagship Show:
- It’s not quite the morning after, but let’s talk about Bayern Munich’s massive 6-0 win over RB Leipzig and what it means.
- Lennart Karl will have a great duo to study — the relentless energy and attacking aggression of Luis Diaz and the brilliant aloofness of Michael Olise.
- Can Serge Gnabry hold down the fort?
- Joshua Kimmich is a constant…and a necessity.
- The backline still needs a big test.
- Bayern Munich could miss out on Nick Woltemade in 2026 as the bidding could open up to other clubs.
- Bayern Munich might have the right approach, but the wrong PR campaign for its approach to finishing the transfer window.
