Can Liverpool FC keep doing this? Late winners have been the story of the season thus far this season, and Virgil van Dijk popped up with another to seal a 3-2 win against Atletico Madrid, after giving up a 2-0 lead in a game where they dominated much of the proceedings.
Vice-captain and goal scorer Andy Robertson commented on the victory and the exhilarating/troubling (depending on your outlook on life) trend this season:
“I think we need to maybe get back to winning a bit simpler and a bit easier.”
“Obviously it’s a great thing to have been able to keep going right to the end but when you’re 2-0 up and you’re playing so well in the first half, it should have been a more comfortable night.”
Birthday boy and head coach Arne Slot also chimed in:
“If you want to beat a team like Atletico, which is known and has an unbelievable mentality, you have to beat them with their own weapon as well and that is mentality.
“I think that’s what we showed again today, that we can beat them also by mentality. But I think we should have made it easier for ourselves.”
Hard to disagree. Obviously, the team will know that there’s things to be ironed out, but in the meantime, we’ll keep losing our minds with every late winner.
