The so-called hard yards of preseason preparations for Bayern Munich’s 2026/27 are currently underway as the first competitive match of the season comes in the form of the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup next weekend against Borussia Dortmund. Bayern are still waiting for some of their first team players to get back to full fitness and the trio of Michael Olise, Dayot Upamecano and Harry Kane to return from their extended holidays, but the rest of the squad is in full swing with the start of the season right
around the corner.
Vincent Kompany has already echoed the sentiment that Manuel Neuer is still the number one keeper for the German Rekordmeister but Jonas Urbig is expected to get more minute this season, whether Neuer experiences any injury problems or not. As such, he’s been in preseason training since earlier this month and he’s featured in both of the friendlies Bayern played in the Audi Tour in Korea and Hong Kong.
Per information from Bild, (via @iMiaSanMia), Urbig also recently used specialized goggles in a session on Bayern’s off day (Tuesday the 11th) to help work on his hand-eye coordination. The goggles are specially designed to reduce the peripheral vision capacity of the person wearing them and they’re also said to have benefits with regard to strengthening eye muscles and reaction — all facets that are absolutely crucial for keepers.
Keepers all over the globe have been utilizing these types of specialized training goggles, with Swivel Vision quickly rising as one of the go-to company’s they’re purchased from, though there are a number of popular brands that clubs use. For Urbig, it is yet another sign that he’s putting in the extra work to play as often as he can this season and continue on the trajectory of one day becoming the club’s number one keeper once Neuer decides it’s time to move on.
The pun here is too difficult to pass up, but with going the extra mile like Urbig is, they can see why he can be the club’s future number one.
