After visiting Ann Arbor this past weekend, the Michigan Wolverines are surging in the recruitment of 2027 four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder from Salt Lake City, Utah has been committed to Illinois since last summer, but that hasn’t stopped Kyle Whittingham, Jason Beck and Koy Detmer Jr. from pursuing him whatsoever. In fact, it hasn’t stopped a lot of schools, as Notre Dame, Cal and Duke have all hosted him this spring as well.
Well, just a few days following Lopati’s
weekend trip to Michigan, Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong ($) has placed a flip prediction in favor of the Wolverines. Rivals’ Adam Gorney also placed a prediction for Michigan to flip Lopati.
“For a lot of the spring it looked like the Irish were the biggest threat to flip him. Now the intel favors Michigan,” Wiltfong wrote. “Lopati was in Ann Arbor last week. He has a great connection with the staff and likes the way the depth chart stacks up. Talking to sources I’ve logged a prediction in favor of the Maize and Blue. Adam Gorney like Michigan too. He also forecasted the Wolverines on the Rivals Prediction Machine.”
Lopati was the first quarterback the new coaching staff offered following the decommitment of four-star Peter Bourque back in February. Whittingham and company have known him dating back to their days coaching at Utah, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if that familiarity has put Michigan ahead of the rest of the competition.
While Lopati is still committed to Illinois as of this writing, Wiltfong said “it’s more likely he ends up elsewhere.” And it sure sounds like Michigan is in the lead to land him.
As a junior this past season, Lopati completed 114-of-176 passes for 2,671 yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also ran 90 times for 730 yards and 10 touchdowns. Lopati is ranked No. 9 at the quarterback position and No. 122 overall on Rivals’ Industry Ranking.
