It has been over a week since the Dallas Cowboys learned that they were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention and in that time we have seen them play two games. They won one and lost one.
A .500 lifestyle is on the line during the team’s final game in this stretch and final on the season as a whole. The Cowboys are currently 7-8-1 and a win on the road against the New York Giants would put them at 8-8-1, perfectly even, something that sounds impossible given that there are currently 17
games in an NFL regular season. The Cowboys were synonymous with a .500 lifestyle during the early days of the Jason Garrett era as they went 8-8 in each of his first three seasons, hopefully history does not repeat itself in that sort of way.
This could only be possible if Dallas wins against the Giants as noted, but it stands to reason that they will do so. Maybe finishing .500 and above means nothing to you as a fan, that wouldn’t be hard to believe, but it is worth noting that if Dallas does then they will avoid a second straight season below that mark as they finished 7-10 last year.
Consider that for all of their faults (and their are many) that the Cowboys have not finished under .500 in consecutive seasons in over 20 years. The last instance in which they did was 2000 through 2002 when they finished 5-11 in three straight seasons, aka the Dave Campo era.
Mo one is suggesting that the team hang a banner for finishing .500 should they win in their finale. But it would be somewhat commendable given that they were 3-5-1 at one point on the season.
