Barcelona are being linked with several strikers this season as the rumor mill begins to prepare for life without Robert Lewandowski.
However, sporting director Deco has once again said the club shouldn’t
be obssessed with trying to sign a No. 9 and used PSG as a prime example.
“You shouldn’t get obsessed with a ‘9’, you might be wrong,” he told Tot Costa. “Maybe you can play without a ‘9’. It’s not the time to talk about signings. Ferran can play as a ‘9’.
“PSG, the European champions, won the Champions League without a striker. Talking about a ‘9’ is a bit of a mistake, even though there are good players.”
Deco said the same thing back in May and it seems he hasn’t changed his mind despite speculation linking the club with Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland and Serhou Guirassy among others.
Torres has emerged as a possible No. 9 option for Barca, although doubts remain over whether the self-titled Shark is the right man for the job.
He’s certainly in the running, not least because new No. 9s don’t come cheap, and the fact he is coming off his best ever goalscoring season in 2024-25.
But is Deco right not to be obsessing about a No. 9? Should he be looking at defensive reinforcements instead? Or should Barcelona be focusing on a replacement for ageing ace Lewandowski?
