Good morning, baseball fans!
On Saturday, the San Francisco Giants held a ceremony to honor their former first baseman/All Star/Captain/Baby Giraffe, Brandon Belt.
Belt played for the Giants for 12 years and was a part of two of the three World Series Championship teams. During that time, he was somehow both severely underrated and a fan favorite, at least depending on who you ask.
I am firmly of the belief that he was not appreciated enough while he was still on the team, which made it a lot of fun
to get to watch him be celebrated by the organization and his former teammates and coaches.
Buster Posey spoke first (after introductions by Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper), with his dry humor on full display to match Belt’s own. George Kontos and Bruce Bochy also spoke at the ceremony, and former players Hunter Pence and Sergio Romo were in attendance on the field. To my surprise, so was former manager Gabe Kapler (though he did receive a smattering of boos from the crowd. I don’t know that I agree with that, but to each their own I guess).
Belt’s high school coaches were in attendance as well, with on-field interviews held before the ceremony started. Belt’s family was in attendance, and his kids threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The ballpark honored Belt throughout the game by showing highlights from both his on-field performance and his on-screen performances from promotional commercials over the years. True Belt fans know it’s a 50/50 split between those two factors on what we love most about him.
I’m told that Belt joined the broadcast booth during the game for a wonderful segment with Kruk & Kuip. Unfortunately I did not get to watch that because I was in attendance at the game. So if anyone has footage from that, please share below in the comments!
I’ll leave you with the full video from MLB’s YouTube channel below. It’s about 22 minutes long, so if you didn’t get a chance to watch it on Saturday, grab your coffee and settle in for some fun!
What time do the Giants play today?
The Giants head to Pennsylvania today to begin a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies at 3:40 p.m. PT.
