Cameron Williams, a 6-11 outstanding defensive player from St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix, committed to Duke Friday afternoon, saying that it had been his “dream school” since he was a little kid. When
asked what stood out about Duke, he said that it was because of how much the staff believed in him.
Williams sounds like a perfect fit for Jon Scheyer’s system: he’s a long, agile player who we expect can switch with ease, a la Khaman Maluach from last season. Given Scheyer’s focus on height, versatility and defense, he should fit right in.
In fact, put him in a lineup with Bryson Howard and that’s going to be very difficult to work against. And if Duke is fortunate enough to land Jordan Smith from Paul VI, which has sent Duke four players in recent years including current Devils Patrick Ngongba and Darren Harris, Duke’s defense will be, well…devilishly tough.
By the way, if you missed the reference, it’s to a video that Duke’s social media team puts out whenever Scheyer lands a recruit. It’s seriously pretty great.
