Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood had his best passing performance of the season in Michigan’s 52-17 win over UTEP. Underwood was 19-of-25 for 223 yards with two touchdowns.
Here’s what Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham had to say about Underwood’s performance
“He took care of the football when he threw it. Made good decisions. High completion percentage was 76%, I think is what
he was, 19-of-25. I think my math is correct. Darn near 10 yards per attempt, which is excellent. It’s one thing to have a high completion percentage when you’re getting five yards an attempt, but he was much higher than that. And like I said, took care of it — didn’t throw it to the other team, and really just went through his progressions. It seemed like his clock and head was really synced up and getting rid of the ball in good time.”
Underwood’s day against UTEP was a major improvement after going 21-of-39 for 281 yards with a touchdown and an interception through Michigan’s first two games. Underwood targeted Andrew Marsh and Buchanan the most, with Marsh hauling in ten receptions and Buchanan notching seven.
The performance from Underwood and Michigan’s top wideouts gives the passing offense momentum heading into the Big Ten Conference portion of the season. Michigan faces one of the best passing defenses next week — the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa ranks No. 6 in passing yards allowed. If Underwood has another strong game versus Iowa, it’ll mean he’s on the right track, and Michigan could wind up being a playoff team.
