The divisions in the National League are (basically) wrapped up. Two of the wild cards spots might as well be. That leaves the final spot as the only one with intrigue and boy is there some intrigue.
You
have the Mets, the team with one of the highest payrolls in the game, giving away the playoff spot they have held for most of the season. They’ve been better since breaking their long losing streak, but if the playoffs were to start today, they would be headed for a vacation.
You have the Reds, the team currently in the third spot, one that is getting by on vibes and fun. There is something about this team that makes them a little bit less dangerous than the others, but if they manage to sneak in, they aren’t a team that anyone would want to play.
You have the Diamondbacks, making yet another late season push to make the postseason and look like the one no one should want to play. Their offense can score early and often and they look like they have juuuuuust enough pitching to be annoying.
So, how do we think this whole thing plays out? Does Cincinnati complete the job? Do the Mets avoid embarrassment and somehow sneak in the playoffs? Do the Diamondbacks somehow get into the playoffs yet again at the last second?
