Good morning, baseball fans!
It is with a heavy heart that I have to share that the menaces of Los Angeles baseball are at it again.
Despite the San Francisco Firebells running the league for the inaugural season of the Women’s Professional Baseball League and entering the playoffs in first place, they fell just short of a championship, with the Los Angeles Queens taking the series 3-2, making them the very first ever WPBL champions.
It physically hurts me to write that, just as it has every time the
Los Angeles Dodgers have won it all. And just as it will when they inevitably win it all again this year.
That said, I’m still proud of the women on the Queens for being the league’s first champions! (Even if they are representing Los Angeles.) And I’m even more proud of the Firebells for being a dominant force in the league this season and giving us all something to cheer for as the Giants have given us almost nothing at all.
And it was a pretty competitive pitching game too. It was a battle between Firebells starting pitcher Jill Albayati and Queens starting pitcher Ayami Sato. Albayati went four and two thirds, allowing just one hit and two unearned runs, with four strikeouts and three walks, which was a phenomenal performance. Unfortunately, Sato pitched a dominant seven innings, allowing only five hits with one strikeout as the Firebells’ bats fell flat after a season of absolutely overpowering their opponents.
It was a good game to complete a very compelling series in which the Firebells battled back from being down 2-0 to force the final game. Just gotta tip your cap and pretend you’re not tipping it to a Los Angeles baseball team.

What time do the Giants play today?
They do not. But you’ll never guess who’s coming to town on Friday to close out the season with just a bit more misery for the hometown fans…
