As poorly as Liverpool’s season has gone in the Premier League so far in 2025-26, there have at least been moments of positivity in the Champions League where they have won four of six and find themselves at least tenuously in the top eight that would qualify for a bye though the first knockout round.
Last night, they got all three points against Inter Milan, Italy’s most in form side. That gets added to victories over Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Atletico Madrid. There have been stumbles
and not all has been perfect performances and flowing football, but on balance things have been positive in Europe.
“It feels very good, especially in these kinds of moments,” Dominik Szoboszlai, scorer of the only goal of the night in the Reds’ 1-0 victory, reflected afterwards. “We fought as a team until the end and we never gave up. At the end all the hard work paid off and that’s what we did so we’ll take the three points home.”
Szoboszai’s goal from the penalty spot, scored after Florian Wirtz very earned what many thought wasn’t a penalty, could have been counted as a massive stoke of luck for Liverpool. On the flip side, though, they’d been equally unlucky to see an Ibrahima Konaté first half goal ruled out due to an incidental handball.
On balance, the sum of the two controversial penalty area calls that impacted the Reds probably on balance added up to the right result, even if individually there were plenty of raised eyebrows about both—and for Szoboszlai, all that matters is that he stayed calm and did his job when the time came.
“We just waited for a decision, to be honest,” he added of the wait to see if a penalty kick would be awarded deep into the second half with the game at the time still a scoreless draw. “I wasn’t really involved. I just focused on myself because I knew that if it’s a penalty I was going to take it, so that’s what was in my head.”
