The first opponent for Rutgers basketball in the Players Era Tournament has been announced, as they are now scheduled to play Houston on November 17th, 2026, for the tournament’s opening round, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Houston and Rutgers have squared off once before in the Steve Pikiell era. In 2021, both teams advanced to the round of 32 to face one another, with the Cougars earning a 63-60 victory over the Scarlet Knights despite Rutgers holding a three-point lead at halftime to advance to the Sweet
Sixteen.
The Players’ Era Tournament will look vastly different this year, as it has expanded up to 24 teams and is divided into two brackets, a 16-team one and an 8-team one. Rutgers and Houston are both in the 8-team bracket called the Players Era 8. The other confirmed first-round matches in this bracket are Florida versus Notre Dame, West Virginia versus Auburn, and Kansas versus UNLV. The second round matches will be determined based on the results of these games. The 16-team bracket will tip off the following week after the 8-team bracket.
Houston joins a list of confirmed non-conference opponents for Rutgers, consisting of Army, Bryant, Seton Hall, and Syracuse
