Wolfsburg were up for it as they hosted Bayern Munich, and it looked like the Bavarians were going to be blown away again. However, a spectacular performance from Jonas Urbig and Michael Olise’s wonder goal against the run of play ensured that Wolfsburg will not be safe just yet.
“I think we defended quite well for 95 percent of the 90 minutes. I don’t think you can completely defend like that for the entire match,” Wolfsburg’s Patrick Wimmer said (via Bayern’s official website). “The fact that the ball
then went in off the crossbar, well, that’s just a testament to the quality of the team and the players they have. If I could say why it wasn’t always like that, we wouldn’t be where we are now, and we wouldn’t be in the final next week.
“Under Dieter Hecking, we’ve definitely regained more stability in our team. And I think that’s simply good for us. We’re playing solid football, we can also play some good football, I think we saw that today. And I think we’re now ready for the final next week.”
Fellow strugglers Heidenheim play on Sunday, which means the battle for survival will last until the final match of the season next week.
