Jonas Urbig has been seen as one of Germany’s biggest goalkeeping talents for years. Mainly able to blossom in the 2. Bundesliga, he racked up 60 2. Bundesliga appearances for various clubs but was sitting
on FC Köln’s bench when Bayern Munich came calling in January of 2025. Bayern’s sporting management took a risk signing him at that point in time. But it seems to be paying off the Bavarians.
“[Bayern’s sporting management] Max Eberl, Christoph Freund, Michael Rechner, everyone was convinced that Jonas will be a very good goalkeeper for us and also for Germany in the future,” head coach Vincent Kompany said after Urbig started and kept a clean sheet in Bayern’s 4-0 Bundesliga win over Heidenheim, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “He learned a lot from Manu and worked very hard in training. He has a great character. He’s being calmly built up alongside one of the best goalkeepers of all time. His development is interesting and the cooperation with Manu is going perfectly.”
As Urbig’s first year at Bayern draws to a close, he can look back at crucial Champions League Round of 16 and quarterfinal appearances, as well as 11 Bundesliga games. What could next year bring the precocious young goalkeeper?
