Newcastle United could face a difficult transfer situation involving Anthony Gordon, with Bayern Munich pushing for a deal and the Magpies’ player interested in a move to the German giants.
The Geordies are believed to value the winger at around £75 million, but that figure may prove difficult to secure depending on how negotiations unfold, with Bayern reportedly not willing to offer more than £60 million for the England international.
Former chief scout Mick Brown, talking to Football Insider, suggested
the situation could shift quickly if all parties push toward the same outcome and avoid any drama, in a shift from the Alexander Isak situation from last summer.
“Newcastle could be in a tricky position with Gordon,” Brown said. “It seems like he wants to join Bayern Munich and they’re happy to let him go, but their asking price at the moment is going to be high.”
The issue has everything to do with leverage. As long as Bayern is the only suitor and bidder for Gordon, it’ll be tough for Newcastle to enter a war with both the club and the player. Newcastle has Gordon under contract for two more years, but with just one team interested in buying, there’s little room for forcing them into raising their bid.
“The problem is, if Bayern don’t want to meet that asking price, but Gordon wants to make that move and isn’t interested in looking elsewhere, it might have to change,” Brown said. “A lot could depend on who else is interested. If someone like Liverpool wants to make a move then that asking price is more likely to be met.”
“But if Bayern know they’re the only contenders, Gordon wants to leave Newcastle, and Newcastle want to sell, then it puts them in a difficult spot. They might have to accept an offer below the asking price, or ultimately he could stay, but then they might be left with an unhappy player.”
Good for NUFC, there are loud whispers out there speaking of interest in Gordon for many more places than just Bavaria. The likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and even Spanish behemoth Barcelona have been linked to Gordon of late, so Newcastle might have a way to land a proper sum of money in exchange for one of their best performers.
