With the summer transfer window almost closed and Liverpool having done next to nothing this summer to fix the numerous squad issues that they struggled with last season, time is running our for sporting director Richard Hughes to make things right before he pops the parachute and heads to Saudi Arabia for a lucrative payday.
While most of the club’s fans are now nervously—and we’d say quite understandably—caught up in Transfer Watch 2026 as a result, the Premier League season did kick off last weekend.
In the opener, the Reds drew 2-2 at Newcastle. Now, the team are preparing to face Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday in matchweek two.
“Finishing your chances, finishing the actions, because that’s what gets you the result,” said right back Jeremie Frimpong when asked what new head coach Andoni Iraola is focusing with the team this week as the trainer tries to prepare the team he has been provided with for the next challenge and facing The Tricky Trees at home.
“You can keep the ball all you want but if you don’t finish then it stays 0-0 or they end up scoring, so finish the actions. I think every coach has their own type of system they want to play and it takes time, so we’re still working on it, but I do think it’s going the right way. It’s going to be a tough game, but we’re happy to be home again.”
Frimpong also revealed that last season he trained to play at both right back and right wing under former trainer Arne Slot, and while he was at Bayer Leverkusen he was deployed in a wingback role that meant less defending than a traditional right back would be asked to do, but that now Iraola has him focused solely on right back.
“This whole pre-season I played right-back and I’m getting more comfortable there,” he added. “Last season was a mixture of right wing and right back, but right now it’s just been right back. I feel like I’m defending more, I’m recovering more. I still attack, of course, but I’m enjoying it and just being on the pitch and trying to help.”
