After a dismal offensive performance in 2025, UNC football has been in active rebuild mode on that side of the ball, from the offensive coordinator on down. The latest notable addition to the offense is Miles O’Neill, transferring to UNC from Texas A&M. Bobby Petrino was part of the Aggies’ successful recruiting effort with O’Neill, so the two have familiarity with each other. O’Neill did not take any other campus visits besides UNC.
O’Neill fits the physical mold of a traditional pocket passer, 6’5”
and 220 lbs with long arms. He played high school in Marblehead, MA before taking his talents to Princeton Hun School in New Jersey. As a recruit, Rivals, 247 and ESPN all rated him 3 stars. His other major suitors coming out of high school were Boston College, Virginia, and Michigan State.
At Texas A&M, O’Neill took a redshirt in year one. This season, he appeared in seven games, all mop-up duty. In total, he attempted 14 passes, completing seven of them of them for 120 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. ESPN assigned him a QBR grade of 13.7 (out of 100) for his limited efforts as a back-up.
O’Neill joins Billy Edwards and Travis Burgess as new faces in UNC’s reworked QB room. Gio Lopez. last year’s starter, and Max Johnson have both declared their intention to transfer, leaving Au’Tori Newkirk as UNC’s lone holdover at QB from last season’s roster. Newkirk appeared in one series against Richmond and one against NC State.
