Dear Roker Report,
Firstly, may I give a big thank you to you and the team for printing the letters I write in. It is genuinely appreciated, and your viewpoints are fully respected. Can I just move on to the so-called “experts” out there who are continually running our club down? Chris Sutton, and the guy from up the road, and others seem to take great delight in telling the football world that we are going to plummet straight back down to the Championship. I don’t know why they are so sure of their opinions, as they are not
based on fact thus far, and we will only get better as the core of the team gels and our home support roars us on. I get that we have not yet played any of the supposedly “big boys” in the league, but neither have they come here and sampled the unique atmosphere of the SoL. There is no doubting (and everyone is now beginning to recognise as such) that the fans here are at a different level to any other club in the division. No-one matches the pure, raw emotion and passion that pours from every corner of the stadium during the games. Visiting teams are finding this out, and coming here will be feared by the opposition, regardless of who they may be. We need to stick to the task. Take each game as it comes. Forget about what Leeds and Burnley are doing and just look after our own. Get stuck into the prima donnas, and this ground will explode. They’d better accept it, as we aren’t simply passing through. The sky’s the absolute limit for this club, and the potential is still frighteningly untapped. Let’s make them all eat humble pie come the end of the season.

Ed’s Note [Gav]: Re: the knackers on the telly — I hope they keep talking shite! It’ll be even sweeter when they’re left with egg on their faces. Sunderland are going to prove lots of people wrong this season, I’m sure of it. They’re welcome to their opinions of course and with the fullness of time they may even be proven right, but as a proper glass-half-full Sunderland fan I’m very confident that they won’t be.

Dear Roker Report,
Now the summer window has shut and we have a weekend off, it’s time to reflect on a sensational few months in our history.
Once we were promoted, the fans knew the squad needed major surgery.
To sign an almost completely new squad in one window… we never thought it could happen, but Sunderland’s recruitment, backed by the board, has given us a real chance of staying up — in fact, now I would say relegation is failure. Haway the lads!

Ed’s Note [Gav]: I think the summer’s business completely exceeded everyone’s expectations, and the club have given themselves the best possible chance of survival. Frankly, if Sunderland can spend as much as we have, and have spent it wisely, and still we go down… everyone else in the future that gets promoted may as well give up as it’s a closed shop. Thankfully, I think the attitude within the club is that we’re aiming high and seeing where we end up, so let’s see. I don’t think anyone who signed for the club over the summer came here thinking they were signing for a club that will go down. They’re all here because they see the plan and where we want to go. That in itself is immensely heartening.
